Everyone can be good at

MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE:

Now, more than ever, Second Harvest Food Bank is being called upon to support people who are facing food insecurity in our community. We cannot provide these services without support from volunteers.

To protect the health of our volunteers and staff, we have made changes to our volunteer program, reducing the number of volunteers at each shift and cutting non-essential projects.

If you can answer "YES" to any of these questions, we ask that you stay home and plan to volunteer with us another time:

  • Are you running a fever (101.4 or above)?

  • Have you or anyone in your household tested positive for COVID within the last 14 days?

  • Have you or anyone in your household been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID in the last 14 days?

FOOD SORTING: Winston-Salem

Individuals  |  Groups  |  Community Service Projects

Every day, Second Harvest moves some 50 tons of food. We rescue food and receive contributions from our local grocery partners, as well as collect food at food drives. We rely on our generous volunteers to help us sort, inspect, and ensure the safety of the food in preparation for distribution to our partner network.

In these unprecedented times, Second Harvest is operating a periodic Pop Up Produce Pantry to provide ready access to healthy food for anyone who needs it. We give away what we have available and refer families to our partner food pantries for any additional assistance they may need.

In the back of the Food Bank is a very busy kitchen, and it is here that we make meals for meal sites serving children, seniors, and differently-abled adults. Volunteers help prepare the meals and get them ready for delivery.

One of our largest sources of food is from The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). We rely on volunteer support to help prepare these products for pick up by our partner programs by getting the food onto pallets for shipment.
