Volunteer at Second Harvest | Second Harvest NWNC

Everyone can be good at

MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE:

Now, more than ever, Second Harvest Food Bank's operations are being called upon to support our community’s most vulnerable. We cannot provide these services without volunteers. We understand that there are concerns about volunteering amid the COVID-19 outbreak, and we take these concerns seriously.

We are centered on protecting our staff, volunteers, partner agencies, and people facing hunger during this public health threat. To protect the health of our volunteers and staff, we have made changes to our volunteer program: reducing the number of volunteers at each shift and cutting non-essential projects. These are crucial in our efforts to protect you, us, and the food we distribute.

With evolving guidance provided by the CDC and Public Health Departments, Second Harvest is actively monitoring developments related to COVID-19 (coronavirus). Due to mounting concern about the spread of COVID-19, if you are feeling unwell, we are asking that you stay at home and reschedule your visit with us. If you have traveled to or through a CDC Risk Level 2 or higher country or destination, we ask that you postpone visiting our facilities for a period of at least 14 days. This includes layovers in airports located in these areas or other travel that requires cross through these areas regardless of how brief.

Here is additional guidance for volunteering during these uncertain times.

FOOD SORTING & EGG GRADING

Individuals  |  Groups  |  Community Service Projects

Every day, Second Harvest moves nearly 37 tons of food. We rescue food and receive contributions from our local grocery partners, as well as collect food at food drives. We rely on our generous volunteers to help us sort, inspect, and ensure the safety of the food we receive and to prepare food for distribution to our partner network.

One of our largest sources of food is from The Emergency Food Assistance Program. We rely on volunteer support to help prepare it for pick up by our partner programs, compiling their orders and getting the food onto pallets for shipment.

PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY MEALS

Individuals  |  Groups  | Community Service Projects

In the back of the food bank is a very busy industrial kitchen, and it is here that we make meals for meal sites serving children, disabled adults, and seniors in need. Volunteers help prepare the meals and get them ready for delivery.
