Government Shutdown

Statement from Second Harvest

March 11, 2025

Although Congress is working to pass a funding bill, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC is still deeply concerned about the possibility of a government shutdown. As we continue to work with our partner programs to respond to historical high levels of food assistance requests in our region, and while continuing to support our neighbors impacted by Hurricane Helene, a government shutdown will create even greater hardship on our neighbors and place even more people at-risk of food insecurity.

As we have consistently and adamantly stated, government nutrition programs, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program), are critical to addressing food insecurity in our communities. Even a temporary disruption of these programs will create difficulties for our neighbors. For local federal employees and veterans, the loss of income and supports will bring about significant challenges and will require us to be ready to respond. When the stability and well-being of individuals are impacted, our communities also suffer.

We urge Congress to act swiftly to avoid a shutdown. At the same time, Second Harvest is, as we know you are, ever ready to stand in the gap for our neighbors.

Should a shutdown occur, SNAP and WIC benefits for March 2025 will be issued on time. TEFAP orders placed and confirmed prior to the shutdown are anticipated to be delivered to the state departments of agriculture as expected.

Our team at Second Harvest will be following these matters closely and providing updates as the situation unfolds. While we hope a resolution is achieved quickly, if a shutdown occurs, we will work to identify the best ways to support federal workers in our region as well as our neighbors who may be impacted by the situation.

Together, we can ensure no one has to choose between essential needs like food, housing, and utilities.
