Encouraging Healthier Foods

Food is foundational to all we aspire to do...and what we eat matters. The following programs, overseen by Second Harvest's Policy, Systems, and Environment Manager and supported by our Nutrition Educators,  increase access to foods that nourish and tools to educate and support families.

farm fresh nourish !

Launched in 2020, Farm Fresh Nourish! brings local farms, food pantries, and Second Harvest's Nutrition Educators together to  1) provide increased access to fresh local produce for low-income households, 2) provide health information for people who self-report as having, or living with someone who has, one or all of these diet-related conditions: prediabetes, diabetes, heart issues (ex. heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol), and 3) support local growers, who are integral to vibrant local food systems.

Interested partner agencies and locally-owned farms operating across Northwest North Carolina are invited to Email us to learn how to get involved.

healthy backpacks

Second Harvest Nutrition Educators can provide menu planning assistance for your BackPack programs, plus nutrition handouts for program participants and their families - available in English and Spanish.

healthy pantry program

Second Harvest's Nutrition Educators partnered with an initial group of food assistance programs to conduct an assessment of their pantry environments. Assessment results are informing the development and execution of plans to promote and encourage healthy eating behaviors, leveraging tools provided by Second Harvest.
