On June 19, 1865, news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. That day is now commemorated as Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, perseverance, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history and culture.
As communities across the country gather to celebrate Juneteenth, food often plays a central role. Families and friends come together around tables, sharing meals, stories, traditions, and fellowship. These gatherings remind us that food is about more than nourishment—it is also about connection, community, and care.
At Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, we see every day how access to nutritious food helps create the foundation people need to move forward. Food supports children's ability to learn, helps older adults maintain their health, strengthens families during difficult times, and allows individuals to focus on work, education, and other opportunities that can improve their lives.
While Juneteenth commemorates a specific moment in American history, it also invites us to reflect on the importance of building communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Across our 18-county service area, Second Harvest works alongside hundreds of partner organizations, volunteers, donors, farmers, retailers, and community leaders to help ensure food is available to neighbors facing challenging circumstances. Together, we provide food assistance, nutrition education, workforce development opportunities, and other resources that help strengthen our region.
The work is not just about meals. It is about supporting healthier families, stronger communities, and a future where more people have the stability they need to pursue their goals.
As we observe Juneteenth, we encourage our community to take time to learn more about its history, celebrate the rich traditions that continue to shape our nation, and reflect on the role each of us can play in supporting one another.
Food brings people together. It creates opportunities for connection, understanding, and community. Those values are worth celebrating not only on Juneteenth, but throughout the year.
From all of us at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, we wish you a meaningful Juneteenth.
