There was a lively conversation in the Second Harvest break room recently about our favorite summer foods. Gazpacho, tomato cheese tart, bar-b-que.
It was a delight to have that same conversation around a table of children eating at one of Second Harvest’s summer meal sites: Corn on the cob, juice boxes and Popsicles made their list; gazpacho did not.
In an editorial earlier this summer, former Second Harvest Board Chair Gaynelle Lovelace called us each to action and implored that we each, as responsible adults, provide for our community’s children during the summer. “It is incumbent upon us,” she said, “to see that children in poverty get the proper nutrition they need to be focused, energetic, and enthusiastic about learning and moving on to the next level of development. There is too much at stake for these developing young bodies and minds to go without the nourishment they need through the summer months to flourish when school starts back next fall.”
You rose to that challenge. Because you cared and gave so generously, we were able to provide over half a million summer meals to children and families across our region, including 1,800 children who enjoyed healthy breakfasts and lunches at 26 summer meals sites sponsored by our food bank. Those breakfasts and lunches were healthy and fresh and provided the nourishment kids need–and deserve–through the long summer months.
Your gifts put tomatoes, corn, chicken nuggets, juice boxes, milk, broccoli, apples and, yes, sometimes even Popsicles, on the table for these kids.
Now, these same children are heading back to school ready to learn across the 18 counties that Second Harvest serves.
Together, we can solve hunger in our communities.
