Lace up your running shoes!
Second Harvest has a growing list of foot races that benefit our work, and we don’t see these only as fundraisers. We see these races as important events to make the connection that hunger is a health issue, just like exercise and physical activity.
“We know that heart disease, obesity and diabetes are more prevalent in communities with low food security and fundraisers like these runs help Second Harvest and our partner network focus on bringing the healthiest food and nutrition programs to those who need it the most,” says Carolyn Breese, Director of Development at Second Harvest.
Proceeds from these events help purchase healthy food for our partner agencies, but also support other Second Harvest programs such as cooking and nutrition classes, FNS outreach, and culinary job training classes for local people who struggle with food security.
Want to get involved making the connection between hunger and health? Check out these upcoming events:
PTI 5k/10k on the Runway March 24th, PTI Airport, Greensboro
This certified run will be held on March 24, 2018, on PTI Airport’s 9,000 foot runway, providing a special close-up view of the airport and surrounding area from the airfield. If you don’t get to hang out on runways or, you know, hang out under airplanes a lot, then this race is for you! The course is wheelchair accessible and baby stroller friendly—there is also a fundraising walk component this year.
What makes PTI 5k/10k extra special is that it benefits not only Second Harvest, but also our fantastic partners at Greensboro Urban Ministry and Open Door Ministries.
Run the South Half Marathon/10k/5k April 15th, The Friendly Center, Greensboro
New this year, Second Harvest is teaming up with Run the South for this neat Greensboro course. With three distances to choose from, sweet swag and a post race BBQ meal, this race is bringing together some of the things we love best: Food, the South, and a good cause.
Empty Bowls 5k Criterium Run/Walk May 26th, Bailey Park, Winston-Salem
Maybe you come every year to Second Harvest’s Empty Bowls event and want to bring your support to the next level, or maybe you are a cycling fan and want to get close to the action—either way, this race is for you!
The Empty Bowls 5K Crit Run/Walk is an exciting, new addition to the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, offering a unique opportunity for walkers and runners to follow the same criterium race loop that the cyclists will be competing on throughout the weekend. Men’s and Women’s professional cycling races, food trucks, and a concert at Bailey Park will follow the race–all part of a jam-packed weekend of excitement, starting with the Gears and Guitars concert Friday night and continuing through Monday when international cyclists will compete.
OKAY, so you aren’t a runner. You can still be a champ and support Second Harvest by volunteering at any one of these events! Volunteers do everything from help us collect food donations, give runners directions on the course or help with packet pick up. Sign up to volunteer below:
