5 Ways to Give Back this Holiday

The holidays are busy, busy, busy.

Between your parties, family visits, and being stuck in traffic while trying to find the perfect gift, it will be a new year before we know it.

In all the hustle and bustle, we know it’s important to you to give back during the holiday season and reflect on community. Here are some ways that people just like you are doing that this year:

1. Set up a donation box. Some families decide to make their own food donation box to place in their home, their office, or on their front porches — all you need is a sturdy cardboard box and some craft supplies. Some families are using their own family traditions and making a Reverse Advent Calendar. If you chose to host a larger food drive, register your drive here to receive your Second Harvest boxes.

2. Make a difference online. Let’s be real: Even during the holidays, many of us are stuck at our desks. However, there are many ways you can make a difference from the spot you are as you read this. Helping Second Harvest share the stories of our community and the impacts of hunger are one of the biggest ways you can help. Check out the other stories on our blog and share them with your friends: it might help inspire someone else to get involved too!

3. Teach your kids about hunger. The holidays require extra time to pause and be thankful for everything you have. Help your kids learn to be grateful and grow empathy for others by teaching them about children who are facing hunger.

4. Honor someone you love. We can’t ignore that this is the season for giving, and often that results in an endless search of gifts for loved ones. This year consider donating to Second Harvest in honor of your friends and family. You will be spreading the love twice as far by giving meals to families who are in need while giving your loved one a meaningful gift that tells them that you appreciate them and their generous spirit. Make a gift here.

5. Volunteer! Grow your heart three sizes this year by giving just a few hours of your time to Second Harvest. It won’t cost you anything, but the feeling of helping your neighbors in need during the holiday season is priceless. Learn more about volunteering with us here!
