It is summertime and that means picnics and mountain lake swimming, bar-b-ques and the beach.
However, for too many North Carolina families the long days of summer can also mean hunger. During the academic year, the majority of North Carolina kids income-qualify for free or reduced priced lunches at school. But when school gets out for summer, those meals go away.
Second Harvest and our partners are working hard to fill the summer meal gap and our efforts are already underway:
In Surry County, children are playing basketball outside of Whitaker Chapel where they have just eaten a meal of chicken fingers and broccoli as part of their kids’ summer meals program thanks to our partners at SEAMS.
In Alexander County, Debra Hollingsworth of the Christian Crisis Center says that they are packing their pantry shelves as full as they can, preparing for the large number of grandparents who care for their grandchildren in the summer, but need the extra help feeding them.
In Guilford County, summer meal sites are opening at recreation centers across the county, where kids will enjoy camp activities and a healthy, balanced meal for lunch.
In Ashe County, volunteers are packing summertime bags filled with pasta and vegetables and sunblock for kids to take home for the weekend after summer camp.

In Watagua County, Tina Krause, the Executive Director of Hospitality House says that the seats for their daily meals are filling up this summer with families trying to stretch their dollars while having extra mouths to feed.

It is clear that summertime is a busy time for Second Harvest and our partners. We want it to be a busy time for kids as well: but to be able to do the swimming and reading and ball playing that should make up summer, they need our support.
